The art of the 19th century, which began in homage to Old Master painting and ended on the cusp of Modernism, reflected the political, social, and industrial advancements and upheavals in America and abroad. The shift from agrarian to industrial societies, and the growth in personal wealth, created a new generation of collectors interested in showcasing the type of fine art they saw in museums within their own homes. As academic and salon art flourished, so did a new generation of artists intent on breaking from dogmatic strictures and proscribed ways of seeing and creating.
