The Hotel Earlington (1894)
Watercolor and pencil on paper, 22" x 33"
Signed lower left "G Welch" (painter) and "James E. Ware, Architect, NY" lower right.
This work was commissioned by the owner of Hotel Earlington. The building was rendered in exact architectural detail by the architect James Ware, and artist George Welch painted in the buildings, figures, and scenery.
Reproduced in color on the back cover of the New York State Historical Association's magazine Heritage, May/June 1985 issue.
The Hotel Earlington promoted itself as facing "the new Bathing House" which was just being constructed in Richfield Springs. Taking the waters was seen as a healthful way to spend part of the summer months throughout upstate New York.
