"The Provincetown wharf paintings lead one to suspect that the artist's intentions lay more in metaphor than in mere description. The anchor, the ship, the steps, the cable, the number three–each of these symbols has some connection to the passage from the physical plane to the spiritual. Pereira's apparent interest here in spiritual passage and transcendence foreshadows concerns more readily confirmed in her later work."
